The Flyers played better but lost 2-1 to the Senators. Ottawa's underlying numbers lagged far behind Philadelphia's: 2.54 xG to 2.95, three high-danger chances to five. The Flyers' quality advantage—0.059 xG per shot versus 0.045—should have carried them to a win, yet they scored just once.

The answer: L. Ullmark. Ottawa's goaltender stopped 22 of 23 shots (0.957 SV%), salvaging 1.95 goals above expected and posting a perfect 100% mark on five high-danger attempts. D. Vladar kept Philadelphia competitive (31 of 33, +0.54 vs expected), but Ullmark's performance decided the game.

Execution was brutal for the Flyers. Five high-danger chances yielded zero goals—an outlier they won't replicate. Ottawa proved lethal off the rush, converting twice from 20 rush attempts. Olle Lycksell's wrist shot from the slot in the second period (03:05) set the tone.

Volume told half the story. Ottawa commanded 59% of shot attempts (33–23 on goal) but didn't generate elite chances to match. Both teams chased rebound opportunities: Ottawa four (zero finished), Philadelphia three (zero finished). Neither found second chances.

This was a goaltending differential. Ullmark's 5-for-5 on high-danger shots—a perfect scoreline against quality—flipped a process edge into a result. The Flyers won't often lose a game where they held that advantage.

The model projects a 2.2–2.5 game favoring Ottawa—Senators at 56% win probability—and the underlying numbers explain why. Ottawa owns the actual play here.

The Flyers have been sharper lately (5-4-1 in their last ten), but Philadelphia's recent pace masks the deeper story: Ottawa controls expected goals at 56.0% versus 51.0%, and territorial dominance at 53.0% Corsi versus 48.0%. That edge matters far more than a streaky ten-game run. The Senators are -20 on goal differential over their past ten, a warning sign—yet model-based projections treat PDO (puck luck) as noise. Ottawa's shooting efficiency sits below expected (PDO 0.993 versus 1.008), suggesting room for upward regression.

Players to Watch

Philadelphia

  • Owen Tippett — 0.88 xG/60, 19G 18A, 2 HD goals, 12.1% shooting
  • Christian Dvorak — 0.81 xG/60, 12G 21A, 3 HD goals, 11.2% shooting

Ottawa

  • Brady Tkachuk — 1.19 xG/60, 11G 20A, 2 HD goals, 7.5% shooting
  • Dylan Cozens — 1.00 xG/60, 13G 15A, 1 HD goals, 9.5% shooting

Tippett is the most dangerous individual on the ice, yet his 12.1% shooting rate is an outlier; Dvorak's 11.2% carries similar sustainability risk. Tkachuk generates at an elite 1.19 xG/60 on just 7.5% shooting—evidence of dominance, not a small-sample artifact. Cozens adds secondary punch with a 9.5% shooting rate that allows room to climb.

The underlying edge is narrow but real: Ottawa's top scorers create more efficiently than Philadelphia's, and the territorial control backs it up. Expect the model's advantage to hold.
