Oilers pull away from the Mammoth
The Oilers won a genuine coin flip — neither side controlled the run of play.
The underlying story
Edmonton's 6-3 victory over Utah masks a game the expected-goals model rated nearly even. The Oilers squeezed 3.60 xG into 6 goals while holding Utah to 3.36 xG and 3 goals—a 2.40-goal overperformance that carried the margin.
The Oilers' edge was real but thin. They held 51% of shot attempts (24–23 on goal) and 52% of expected goals, yet scored twice as many goals as underlying play warranted. Utah's goaltending cracked first: K. Vejmelka surrendered 1.40 goals above expectation, coughing up three from low-danger areas while Edmonton converted elsewhere. S. Skinner answered with perfection on the other end—a 100% stop rate on five high-danger shots that could have narrowed the gap.
Utah generated the rush chances. The Mammoth matched Edmonton goal-for-goal off the rush (3 each) across identical 26-chance samples, but couldn't finish anywhere else. They went 0-for-5 on high-danger chances and failed to convert any of five rebound opportunities despite effectively crashing the net. Edmonton did the opposite: buried low-danger looks and executed in transition, a sequence Utah's defense couldn't disrupt.
The game's hidden story was deceptive. High-danger chances favored Edmonton 7–5. Connor McDavid's wrist shot from the point (third period, 17:34) swung momentum. Edmonton's elite conversion—skill, luck, or both—separated a contest that xG analysis would've called even.
