The scoreboard says Tampa Bay dominated San Jose 7-3, but the underlying play suggested a toss-up. Expected goals were nearly split 4.17–4.33, meaning the Sharks generated nearly as much as the Lightning — the gap was just goaltending and execution.

A. Vasilevskiy made the difference. He stopped 19 of 22 shots (0.864 SV%) and overperformed his expected by 1.17 goals. The Sharks' goaltending tandem collapsed: Y. Askarov gave up 1.33 more than expected over limited work (7 saves on 10 shots, 0.700 SV%), and A. Nedeljkovic gave up 1.34 more than expected (12 saves on 16, 0.750 SV%).

San Jose created the better scoring chances. They won the high-danger count 10-6 and generated 5 rebound chances, converting one. But they got out-finished. Tampa Bay scored 2 goals from low-danger areas — spots the opposing goalie needs to stop — and was lethal on the rush with 6 goals on 27 chances. The Lightning's power play was surgical: 3 goals on 9 shots, an 0.80 expected-goal total that reflects sustained zone time and clean looks.

A. Vasilevskiy's brilliance and the Sharks' goaltending collapse tell the real story. San Jose was the better play; Tampa Bay was the better team on the night.

The model projects a 2.6–2.4 Lightning win with Tampa at 53% win probability. This is as close to a pick'em as you'll find.

Tampa dominates the underlying play at 54.0% expected goals versus San Jose's 48.0%. That play advantage comes from territory: the Lightning control shot attempts at 53.0% Corsi. San Jose will compete from a defensive position all night.

The problem for Tampa is efficiency. Their PDO is 1.019—they're converting at an inflated rate and should expect regression, potentially soon.

San Jose has one genuine advantage: rest. The Sharks arrive on three days off while Tampa plays on just one day. That's not trivial for endurance, but it won't overcome the play-driving deficit. If Tampa's goaltending steadies, the game should follow form.

One tactical wrinkle: J. Johansson is on a back-to-back. Watch whether Tampa turns to a relief or starts him fatigued. That's San Jose's only realistic opening.

Players to Watch

Tampa Bay

Brandon Hagel is the engine: 1.10 xG/60, 23 goals and 26 assists, shooting at 15.8%. That's high-volume, high-efficiency scoring. Anthony Cirelli operates at 0.95 xG/60 with 15 goals and 18 assists. His 17.0% shooting rate is unsustainable variance; he'll regress.

San Jose

Pavol Regenda matches Hagel's rate (1.10 xG/60) but is marked inactive. Igor Chernyshov carries the load: 0.91 xG/60, six goals, eight assists, shooting at 15.0%. He's San Jose's only productive forward—and he's also their defensive weak link.

Victor Hedman is Tampa's vulnerability. San Jose's upset bid, if one exists, runs through pressure on him.

The structure favors Tampa decisively. The Lightning should outplay the Sharks and convert.
