Wild edge the Kraken in overtime
The Wild won a genuine coin flip — neither side controlled the run of play.
The underlying story
Minnesota won 3-2 in overtime, but the underlying numbers favored Seattle. The Kraken generated 3.84 expected goals to the Wild's 3.65—a 51-49 split that predicted a close result or a Kraken win. Instead, Seattle underperformed its xG by 1.84 goals, wasting quality chances while Minnesota capitalized on weaker looks.
The Kraken controlled shot geography: 45% of shot attempts, 28 on goal to Minnesota's 34. But volume and positioning didn't translate to results. Minnesota went 0-for-6 on high-danger chances, a rare collapse that typically punishes teams. Minnesota escaped this self-inflicted wound through atypical low-danger finishing: two goals from spots where opposing goaltenders live to make saves.
Goaltending proved decisive. J. Wallstedt (MIN) made 26 saves on 28 shots and finished +1.84 above expected, stealing the game with an exceptional performance. P. Grubauer (SEA) was no liability—31 saves on 34 shots, +0.65 above expected—but when skaters leave 1.8 goals on the table, a resilient night from your goalie cannot overcome the deficit.
Minnesota's efficiency off the rush was the true difference: three goals on 28 rush chances. Seattle created nine rebound opportunities and converted two; Minnesota created three and converted none. Rush scoring is the hardest angle to defend.
Mats Zuccarello's wrist shot from the slot at 02:09 of overtime was the turning point, ending a game Seattle probably deserved on volume alone.
The danger ladder
SEA went 0-for-18 from medium danger on 1.77 expected goals — 1.8 left on the table.
Finishing vs expected
MIN finished -0.7 against expected, SEA -1.8 — J. Wallstedt (MIN) saved 1.8 goals above expected.
