Minnesota beat Vegas 4–2 despite the Golden Knights dominating possession. Vegas held 56% of shot attempts (31 to 24) and owned 53% of expected goals (4.46 to 3.95). But the scoreboard didn't match the play.

Goaltending and execution broke the tie. F. Gustavsson posted a 0.935 save percentage and stopped 1.95 goals above expected—he stole the game. A. Schmid managed only 0.833 (20 saves on 24 shots), and Vegas couldn't cash in where it mattered: they went 0-for-6 on high-danger chances. Minnesota converted twice from low-danger spots—the kind of goal variance that usually self-corrects.

Mitch Marner's wrist shot from the doorstep (16:55, third period) was the turning point. It came when the game was still negotiable.

The rush game was efficient on both sides. Vegas scored 2 goals on 33 rush chances; Minnesota buried 3 on 29. When the third period tightened, Minnesota's superior finishing held. Vegas underperformed their expected goals by 1.9, a telling stat that captures their night: strong possession, weak conversion.

The underlying lesson: shot volume and expected goals matter, but they don't guarantee results. F. Gustavsson's brilliance and Vegas's wasted chances determined this one.

1.007PDO — luck, not skill0.983

VGK holds 4 of 6 process categories — and PDO (1.007 vs 0.983) says MIN has run hotter.

Source · MoneyPuck season tables · 5v5

The model projects a 2.3–2.6 goals difference with the Golden Knights at 54% win probability—about as close to a pick'em as you'll find in the NHL.

Minnesota is the hotter team by points pace, sitting 7-2-1 over their last 10. But the Golden Knights control puck movement at 5v5, running 52.0% Corsi to Minnesota's 48.0%. Minnesota's expected goals percentage (52.0%) nearly matches Vegas (54.0%), creating a genuinely even underlying matchup.

Vegas' PDO sits at 0.983, running cold and due for positive regression. Minnesota's 1.007 PDO tells a very different story, yet the territorial game still tilts toward Vegas.

Goaltending could be the tiebreaker. A. Hill is on a back-to-back; watch for either a backup start or a tired starter.

For Minnesota, Matt Boldy (22G 18A, 0.89 xG/60, 5 hard-chance goals, 13.7% shooting) remains the primary offensive engine. Robby Fabbri (2G 3A, 0.88 xG/60, 1 hard-chance goal, 6.9% shooting) is likely out, which removes depth scoring. Minnesota's weak point defensively is Matt Kiersted, while they've generated no production from hard chances or rebounds this season—a reliance on elite shot quality that can't sustain a hot streak.

For Vegas, Brandon Saad (3G 6A, 0.91 xG/60, 1 hard-chance goal, 4.1% shooting) projects as likely inactive, which stings their edge depth. That leaves Tomas Hertl (5G 17A, 0.88 xG/60, 1 hard-chance goal, 4.3% shooting) as the main offensive option. Vegas' weak link defensively is Rasmus Andersson; they too have generated zero hard-chance and rebound production, relying entirely on territorial dominance to generate offense.

This matchup hinges on whether Minnesota's hot hand survives Vegas' territorial grip. In a true coin flip, it almost certainly doesn't—but the 54% number already prices in that regression.
