The Flyers' 2-1 victory over Vegas masks a more troubling reality: the Golden Knights dominated the underlying metrics and should have won. Vegas generated 3.48 expected goals to Philadelphia's 3.18, held 60% of shot attempts (25–17), and created eight high-danger chances. None of it mattered.

S. Ersson stole the game. The Flyers goaltender made 24 saves on 25 shots (0.960 SV%), outperforming his expected save percentage by 2.48 goals. More impressively, he went 8-for-8 on high-danger chances—an unbeatable rate that converted Vegas's pressure into frustration. Meanwhile, A. Hill's 0.882 SV% (15/17 saves) represented a 1.18-goal shortfall, and Vegas's inability to finish on its eight high-danger attempts proved decisive.

Vegas's 0-for-8 performance on high-danger chances is the sort of variance that rarely repeats. They crashed the net aggressively, generating three rebound looks, but found nothing. Vegas underperformed their xG by 2.48 goals—a chasm between process and outcome.

Philadelphia won because T. Konecny was lethal. The winger recorded two goals in just 17:19, including the go-ahead wrist shot from the high slot that separated these teams. The Flyers also exploited transition hockey ruthlessly, scoring twice off 21 rush attempts. That efficiency, paired with Ersson's wall-building, proved enough.

J. Eichel (1A, 24:55) and M. Stone (1A, 23:12) were Vegas's best forwards—creating chances even as conversion abandoned them. Their work went unrewarded in a game the score tells one story and the tape tells another.

VGK holds 5 of 6 process categories — and PDO (1.008 vs 0.983) says PHI has run hotter.

Source · MoneyPuck season tables · 5v5

The model projects a 2.2–2.5 goal margin favoring Vegas, with the Golden Knights at 55% win probability. This lean rests on form advantage, underlying dominance, and PDO regression waiting to normalize.

Vegas is 7-2-1 in their last 10 games; Philadelphia sits at -14 goal differential over the same stretch. The Golden Knights own the underlying play at 54.0% 5v5 expected goals versus 51.0%, and dictate territorial possession at 52.0% Corsi compared to Philadelphia's 48.0%. Control of ice position compounds offensive opportunity.

The deeper edge lives in PDO regression. Vegas's 0.983 PDO means they're running cold relative to shot quality—due for positive variance. Philadelphia's 1.008 PDO signals they've overshot their expected reality, a gap that closes once luck normalizes. Regression favors Vegas in a close game.

A. Schmid is on back-to-back duty, a potential fatigue factor or backup start that hands Vegas another advantage.
