Mammoth pull away from the Stars
The Mammoth stole one. They lost the expected-goals battle 2.80–3.54 and won anyway.
The underlying story
Utah defeated Dallas 6–3, but the scoreline masks what happened on the ice. Dallas dominated process, controlling 56% of expected goals. The Mammoth stole this one.
The Stars' supremacy started in the shot battle. Dallas held 58% of shot attempts, 30 on goal to Utah's 22, translating to a 3.54–2.80 xG advantage. By the math of hockey, Dallas was the better team. Utah just finished better.
The gap between process and result came down to two factors: goaltending and efficiency on the rush. V. Vanecek saved 27 of 30 for Utah, running 0.54 goals above expectation. C. DeSmith faced 21 shots and surrendered 2.20 more than expected—an indictment of his performance regardless of Dallas's shot volume. Utah also dominated the high-danger zone: two goals on five chances (40%) against Dallas's eight high-danger attempts. Utah added three low-danger goals, shots DeSmith should have had.
On the rush, Utah's superiority was decisive. The Mammoth scored five on 22 rush chances; Dallas scored three on 25. That efficiency, plus the softies, pushed Utah to 3.2 goals over their expected output.
Adam Erne's snap shot from the high slot in the third period became the turning point—a real, dangerous moment when Utah's execution began to overwhelm Dallas's control.
Dallas created the better game and got nothing. That's the story here.
